A shutdown of the federal government this weekend still looks highly probable.
The House of Representatives passed three of four bills put up for a vote late Thursday. A bill to continue funding government business is likely to come to the floor Friday, but it seems unlikely to pass given the divisions between Republicans and Democrats on key issues.
While the passage of the House bills Thursday was a sign that some deals can be done, it’s still not clear how House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is going to get the handful of Republicans who want bigger spending cuts to vote for more funding and avert a shutdown. McCarthy suggested that getting new measures on border control might help break the deadlock.
Goldman Sachs
has put the odds of a shutdown at 90% and expect it to last three weeks.
