Elon Musk’s xAI launches Grok, an AI chatbot ‘with a rebellious streak’

Elon Musk unveiled a wisecracking AI chatbot called Grok over the weekend.

The new product from his artificial-intelligence startup, xAI, is “modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and “is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humor,” the company said in a blog post announcing the launch Saturday night. “It will also answer spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems,” xAI said.

While not yet on the level of OpenAI’s GPT-4, xAI hopes to quickly ramp up Grok’s capabilities. “Grok is still a very early beta product — the best we could do with 2 months of training — so expect it to improve rapidly with each passing week with your help,” xAI said.

“Oh this is gonna be fun,” Musk tweeted, adding that Grok will be available for X Premium users who pay a $16 a month subscription fee.

XAi said Grok will access data from Musk’s X — formerly Twitter — to provide “real-time knowledge of the world.”

The company warned that “as with all the [large language models] trained on next-token prediction, our model can still generate false or contradictory information.”

Still, “we believe that AI holds immense potential for contributing significant scientific and economic value to society, so we will work towards developing reliable safeguards against catastrophic forms of malicious use,” xAI said. “We believe in doing our utmost to ensure that AI remains a force for good.”
